India rewards a little preparation more than most places. Below is the practical groundwork — season by region, how long things actually take, and what to sort out before you fly. When you travel with us, all of it is set out again in your own itinerary, specific to your route.
When to travel
Best time to visit, by region.
There is no single season for India. This is the short version; we will refine it around your dates.
North India & Rajasthan
October – MarchComfortable days and cold desert nights. April and May are very hot; the monsoon arrives around July.
South India & Kerala
October – MarchWarm and humid year-round. Two monsoons touch the south, so timing depends on the exact coast.
Eastern Himalaya (Sikkim, Darjeeling)
March – May, October – early DecemberClearest mountain views come after the monsoon, roughly late October to December.
Ladakh
May – SeptemberAccess depends on snow and high passes. Outside these months much of the region closes.
Bhutan
March – May, September – NovemberSpring brings rhododendron; autumn brings the clearest skies and the festival calendar.
Northeast India
October – AprilMeghalaya receives extraordinary rainfall between May and September.
Before you travel
Practical guidance.
Most visitors to India need a visa arranged before travel, and many nationalities can apply online. Rules differ by passport and change without much notice, so treat the official portal as the only authority.
- Apply only through the official Government of India e-Visa portal. Many commercial sites charge a fee to submit the same form.
- Passports are generally expected to be valid well beyond your return date, and to have blank pages. Check the current requirement before you book flights.
- Bhutan is a separate country with its own entry rules and a Sustainable Development Fee. We handle the Bhutan permit as part of your journey.
- Some regions of India — parts of the Northeast, and certain border areas — require additional permits. We arrange these in advance where your route needs them.
We can tell you what is normally required for your nationality and arrange the permits within our control, but we cannot issue visas or guarantee entry. Always confirm on the official portal.
